Celebrating 25 Years of Italian Aroma Coffee

2017 marks the 25th Anniversary year of Italian Aroma Coffee and it’s safe to say that so much has changed within the industry since it launched in 1992! Today Marco, Managing Director, gives us the low down about his coffee journey so far and what he hopes the next 25 years with Italian Aroma Coffee will bring…

What are some of your key business milestones?

One of my key milestones has to be starting my own company, of course! The ultimate decision was choosing which industry. I was inspired by my father who worked in the food industry and it was him that gave me the idea behind Italian Aroma Coffee. Following from that, securing my first customer is something I’ll never forget; Oscars Bistro in Partick is who I sold our first batch of coffee beans to and I remember it like it was yesterday. Shortly after we also sold our first coffee machine to Café Crème in Bearsden and this was a big deal! The market was very different back then, it was all about filter coffee and espresso coffee hadn’t arrived yet. It took a lot of persuasion to buy our machines!

What sparked your motivations to work in the coffee industry?

The coffee industry is very exciting and fashionable. It’s growing fast and so is the coffee community. As a younger man, I wanted to do something I enjoyed and as the coffee market changed, I enjoyed being more creative with coffee and my brand. It’s a great buzz seeing people drinking my coffee.

How has the industry and Italian Aroma Coffee changed over the past 25 years?

The coffee industry is bigger and better than ever. Coffee is becoming an important part of people’s lives. Coffee houses are the new pubs; they are very popular meeting places and consumers are looking for more artisan and “hip” cafes to spend time in. So, it’s also very much about the environment as well as the quality of coffee that is served. Consumers know much more about coffee nowadays; they want to know more about the product like where the beans are from. In a sense, it’s like wine – coffee has also matured and evolved over time with more consumers interested in its origins. The coffee industry has definitely evolved for the better!

What do you like most about working in the coffee industry?

I love being involved in an industry that’s changing and evolving all the time. It keeps us on our toes. It’s very much a trendy and fashionable industry and this is why we have rebranded to appeal to the younger market.

What do you like best about working with family?

It’s great to be able to share something good with your children and see them become excited and passionate about the things you’re passionate about. It’s also nice to talk to your son or daughter about a business issue to see how they view the brand or what they would do to help improve the brand. Working with younger people keeps me young as well too!

Where do you see Italian Aroma Coffee in the next 25 years?

I hope to see Italian Aroma Coffee expand further internationally. We have moved into England and Europe but we’d love to be recognised worldwide. You could be sat in the streets of Copenhagen or Berlin with a cup of Italian Aroma Coffee, there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work in these markets.

Also, we believe that in-house micro roasting is the future within the next 5 years. Consumers are constantly looking for freshness and honesty. With U-Roast, we’re proud to be pioneers within the coffee industry.
